| Some years ago, there was a nation, which
had serious problems with such things as distant wars and disorders at home and the
"generation gap." A retired general sat down and wrote his feelings to his 17-year-old grandson:
"Dear Mark: The war we are in is atrocious. Four years of official requisitioning has ruined the villages. Civil Administrators, installed in the disorder, are capable of all sorts of treachery.
One part of our ills come from the fact that too many men are shamefully rich and too many desperately poor. Happily, in our day, we tend towards a balance between the extremes.
The simple human situation we are in today is the most upsetting thing of all. Morals are a matter of private agreement; decency is a matter of public concern. Our ages are different. But the space of generations seemed to me but a small thing when the problem was to safeguard the security of the world.
You are perhaps the only being who has never lied to me. I cannot lie to you now; your generation frightens me "
The letter was written in the second century by a Roman Emperor and General of the Empire, Hadrian, to his grandson, Marcus Aurelius, who subsequently became the head of the Roman Empire himself. ~Source Unknown~ |
